When you own your own home, it can be comforting to know that you have your own washer and dryer that you can rely on. From time to time, you may experience issues with either your washer or dryer that you'll have to address. Knowing the most common issues and how to fix them can better help you when you have a problem with your units.

Washer Won’t Run

From time to time, you may run into the issue where your washer won't run. If your washer display doesn't have any power going to it, then the issue is likely with your main power supply. It could also be an issue with the outlet your washer uses. Run down to your electrical panel and see if there is a tripped breaker for your washer. If so, turn it to the off position and then turn it back on.

If the display on your washing machine is working, but your washer won't run, it's likely one of two issues. If your washer has been running, it may be overheating and need to cool before it starts again. Give it a good 30 minutes and try to run your washer again. If you haven't been running your washer before having this problem, the door may not have latched. Open the door and locate the switch that gets pushed in to signal to the washer that the door has shut. Sometimes the switch may get jammed and you may need to move it back and forth to unlock it.

Washer Leaks

Another common issue you may run into with your washer is that it leaks from time to time. Most of the time, this issue is due to a loose piping connection. The best way to figure out the culprit of your water leak is to trace the water back to where it's coming out of the machine. If you notice that it's leaking at one of the hose connections, you'll want to tighten it up. You want to check the connections for the hot and cold at the back of your washer as well as the hose for the drain. If your washer is still leaking and the connections seem fine, it's best to contact a professional. They can see if there's a problem with any of the parts. These can include you water inlet valve, drain pump, tub seal, or other parts of your washing machine.

Clothes Not Drying

A very common issue that many homeowners run into with their dryers is that they won't dry their clothing. You'll likely notice that your clothes are taking a lot longer to get dry than they used to. The most common culprit of this issue is a build-up of dryer lint. You'll want to pull out and check your filter to see if it's full of lint. If your filter is fine, then you'll want to disconnect your vent hose and check it for any obstructions.
