5 Ways to Troubleshoot Your Ice Maker

It seems like every appliance is put to work all at once during the summer, from air conditioners to refrigerators to ice makers. However, nothing is more frustrating than having a broken ice maker on any day. Here are five reasons your ice maker is not working and how to troubleshoot these issues.

1. Too high temperatures on the freezer

Normally, the average temperature for a freezer is between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are experiencing higher than normal temperatures, the appliance may have an internal malfunction preventing it from working properly. Before calling the technician:

Check if there is dirt that has accumulated around the condenser coils. If the condenser coil is dirty, clean it with a vacuum to break up any dirt.

If your ice maker fails to work after doing this, check if the evaporator coils have too much frost around them. If so, hire a technician to perform appliance repair to your ice machine.

2. Water filter issues

If there is an issue with your water filter, the ice maker cannot produce new cubes to replace old ones. This can be a problem, especially during the hot months of summer when you need ice cubes more than ever. Check if your water filter is clogged by removing it from the machine and checking the internal area for blockages. Fill a glass with water and let it run through the filter to see any changes in its flow rate. If not, replace the filter with a new one and check if your ice maker works.

3. The ice maker assembly component may be the problem

The assembly component is a vital part of the ice maker, and its malfunction can cause a complete breakdown of the appliance. The ice maker assembly may need to be replaced if it has a broken part, preventing the water from going through. Take apart the bin and remove the ice maker arm. Replace any broken components of the arm and reassemble.

4. Inadequate water pressure

There are many reasons why your water pressure may be too low to operate the ice maker. If other appliances take in high amounts of water, like the dishwasher or washing machine, it can cause problems for your ice maker. Ensure that these appliances are not running when you try to make ice; if they are, there is likely an issue with the float switch, and you should call a technician.

5. Dysfunctional Thermostat

If the thermostat in your appliance is malfunctioning, it can prevent your ice maker from working. If you have a digital screen on your freezer, it will display an error code that you can research with the manual. This will help narrow down what is wrong with the device and how to fix it. If there are no codes displayed after checking all other problems, you could need to replace the thermostat.

If none of these issues seem to be the problem, it is probably best to call a technician who can come and fix your broken ice maker. At Command Service Center, we are the company to call when it comes to appliance repairs. Contact us today to service your appliances.
